Conflict resolution with
a cultural element.
Neutral and confidential mediation that handles language and cultural differences for a comprehensive resolution and successful settlement.

Lucille Ritterstein
Judicial Interpreter & Mediator
My professional background involves working in some of the most difficult conflict environments—jails, prisons, court holding cells, as well as high-stakes legal disputes in civil court. In these situations, hostility, mistrust, fear, and cultural distance can be a recurring interference to meaningful communication.

I facilitate connection by drawing on communication tools developed over fifteen years of work as a legal linguist, both in and out of the courtroom, in California and New York.
My approach to conflict resolution adapts to the needs and dynamics of the parties involved. Each dispute presents a different set of personalities, communication styles, and concerns, and the process is guided accordingly. When necessary, I implement a structured and directive approach to stabilize the discussion, restore clarity, and keep the parties focused on resolution.

Ms. Ritterstein is a judicial interpreter of Spanish certified by the California Judicial Council since 2011, subsequently certified in New York. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Linguistics from UCLA and UCLA Extension Court Interpreting and Translation. She is the owner of Legal Translations Inc, with an office location in Santa Barbara and San Francisco.

Ms. Ritterstein serves as a linguistic expert in criminal cases specializing in linguistic bias and the misattribution of mens rea to language-processing behavior of LEP persons. She consults on cultural and legal dynamics in cases involving persons of Hispanic origin.
She was formally trained in traditional conflict resolution at the Bar Association of San Francisco.
